The Third Meeting of the SAARC Working Group on Biotechnology helds in Colombo |

The Third Meeting of the SAARC Working Group on Biotechnology was held in Colombo on 4-5 June 2009. The Meeting was inaugurated by Hon.Professor Tissa Vitarana, Minister of Science and Technology at Hotel Galadari on 4 June. Welcoming all delegates from SAARC Member States,Prof. Vitarana stressed that biotechnology has a crucial role for the overall socio-economic development of the region and underlined the importance of bridging the technology gap that is vital for meaningful socio-economic development by harnessing the potential of biotechnology in the region. The Minister called for devising aregional approach to biotechnology and stressed the need to work together collectively. The SAARC Secretary General was represented at the Meeting by Mr. Pema Dorji, Director of the SAARC Secretariat. Thisis the first time that the Working Group met since Sri Lanka assumed its Chairmanship in January 2009. |

SAARC Cultural Centre in Matara will foster friendship and greater understanding among people in the region |

Speaking at the inauguration of the Office of the SAARC Cultural Centre in Colombo on 25 March, Chief Guest Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama hailed the event as an important step that would enable the region to begin work on the implementation of the SAARC Agenda for Culture through the operationalization of the SAARC Cultural Centre. The Office of the SAARC Cultural Centre which thus commenced work yesterday will also be responsible for overseeing the construction of a Cultural Centre Complex in Nawimana, Matara, where the Centre will be eventually housed. |

SAARC Council of Ministers pledge cooperation to combat terrorism |

The SAARC Council of Ministers meeting in Colombo on 27-28 February renewed their commitment to strengthen comprehensive cooperation among SAARC Member States to combat and eliminate all forms and manifestations of terrorism, and affirmed the need to further the legal regime and institute pragmatic cooperation to address the issue effectively. The Ministers made this pledge in a Ministerial Declaration on Cooperation in Combating Terrorism at the conclusion of the 31st Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers, under its current Chair, the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Rohitha Bogollagama. |
