People of South Asia are the stakeholders of SAARC |

The City of Kandy today (19 November 2008) welcomed delegates from the eight Member States of SAARC, the SAARC Secretary-General H.E. Dr Sheel Kant Sharma, officials of the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu and Directors of SAARC Regional Centres to the thirty-fourth Session of the SAARC Programming Committee. This was the first SAARC Meeting of Senior Officials from the Ministries of Foreign and External Affairs of the SAARC Member States since the 15th Summit in Colombo in August 2008.
The inauguration ceremony of the Meeting held at Hotel Earl's Regency was attended by the Governor of the Central Province Hon. Tikiri Kobekkaduwa, dignitaries from Kandy, Heads of Government Departments, and Professors and Deans of various Faculties of the University of Peradeniya.

SAARC countries expedite setting up of food bank |
Agricultural Ministers of the SAARC countries met in New Delhi on 05th November 2008, for an Extraordinary Meeting to further deliberate on the operationalization of the SAARC Food Bank. The SAARC Food Bank, which was proposed during the Colombo Summit of the SAARC countries, is a move to maintain a food stock to be used in the emergency food demands which may occur in the region. With an initial stock of 243,000 tonnes of foodgrain, the SAARC food bank will be setup with the contributions of the SAARC Nations. |

I believe that as the 15th SAARC Summit in Colombo draws to a close, all of us who have participated in the deliberations can draw satisfaction from a most productive and fruitful outcome.
In the final analysis, all regional cooperation efforts including in South Asia, have as their objective, prosperity and equitable development. Our deliberations have therefore had a strong focus, on economic and commercial cooperation. |
